How long have you worked/had a business in the Town Centre?
Previous to joining Barrow BID as Project Manager, I worked as the Manager of Ryman now for 11 years, including undertaking many other additional roles within the company.
Why did you get involved with Barrow BID?
I initially got involved in Barrow BID by being approached to volunteer my time to form a committee to assist with the organising of the Festival of Transport. As I learnt more about what Barrow BID was all about, I wanted to be more involved and applied to join the Board. I then became Chairman of Barrow BID last year. I’m passionate about what I do and I want to be able to make a difference to our Town Centre. Ryman encourages their teams to run their stores as if they were their own, to be a part of their local community, something that I think also translates into what Barrow BID is all about - a group of businesses coming together and supporting OUR Town Centre.
Favorite BID event or project?
I'm probably a bit biased on this one seen as the Festival of Transport has become my event, organised as a partnership between Barrow BID and a group of local vehicle enthusiasts, town centre businesses and local community leaders. I think it is a brilliant event for people of all ages which covers the entirety of the Town Centre, with something happening on nearly every street. The event just keeps growing year on year…...we have some great surprises lined up for our next event.
My other favorite project is the new Christmas lights we installed in the Town Centre last. They added a great atmosphere to the town and we had such positive feedback from both businesses and the general public about how good they looked. In the future, we are looking to extend the new lighting even further!
Tell us something most people wouldn't know about you?
One of the drawbacks of being very tall is that it is very difficult to buy shoes when you have size 15 feet!
Additional comments/information:
Barrow BID is run by a Board of volunteers and funded by the businesses of Barrow. It’s a way of us all coming together and being able to improve the place we live and shape our own futures. Never before has Barrow had so much investment on the horizon, with over 50 million in the pipeline through various government schemes. As a BID we sit on each of those Boards responsible for delivering that investment, so now Town Centre businesses actually have a voice on how our town will look for years to come. Previous Chair of the BID and as a business Manager myself, I would encourage each and every business out there in Barrows Town Centre to get involved, get in touch, take responsibility and help our Town Centre thrive!
