What to do in Barrow MAKE A DAY OF IT
Barrow-in-Furness Business Improvement District (BID)
SHOPPING & EATINGBarrow-in-Furness has a mix of national brands (Debenhams, M&S, Wilko and WH Smith, New Look, Pandora and the Entertainer), local independent retailers and Barrow Indoor Market, with around 60 stall-holders. It has many cafés, restaurants, pubs and bars and night-life clubs.
INVESTMENTThere is a huge amount of investment in Barrow. We have the Trident Successor submarine programme at BAE Systems and the Walney Offshore Windfarm. These projects are creating jobs and providing opportunities for smaller businesses to work in the resultant supply chains.
SPORTBarrow is a town steeped in sport. Both its football and rugby clubs have a passionate local following. In addition to the ‘big’ clubs there is a huge local club scene in football, both rugby league and union and in cricket with many other sports being enjoyed from netball and tennis to cycling and running.
CULTUREBarrow has a really vibrant cultural scene with wide and varied local talent. The town has some nationally and internationally renowned organisations, such as Art Gene and Signal Film & Media. Music is a focal point of Barrow with many music venues and festivals across the town.
COUNTRYSIDEMany people think of Barrow purely as an industrial town. However, being on the south-west corner of the Lake District, it is surrounded by fells and idyllic beaches. You might see Grey Seals, Otters, Natterjack Toads, Badgers, Red Foxes, deer, Eider Ducks, four species of tern, Ospreys...
HERITAGEThere is evidence of Neolithic inhabitants and 9th century Norse settlement. During the Middle Ages the area was controlled by the monks of Furness Abbey. Today Barrow is associated with the industrial revolution and the discovery of hematite which led to Barrow’s huge shipbuilding heritage.
The BID Team is presently in the process of finalising its programme for 2018.
Details of our exciting events will be posted here soon.
