Meet the team - Melanie Corrie

As a collective of businesses working together to improve our town centre, Barrow BID is ran by a group of volunteer directors, who give their time and expertise to projects and initiatives to improve their town.

One board member who exudes passion for our town centre is Melanie Corrie, owner of Corrie & Co Estate Agents. Melanie has lived and worked in Barrow all her life, and has seen first hand the changing town centre landscape. Joining the board as a volunteer director was a must for Melanie, and she continues to share her knowledge to help further the work we do.

Melanie said: "I have to admit, when I first heard about Barrow BID, I had my doubts. Initially, I couldn't see how it would benefit my Estate Agency business. However, it didn't take long for me to recognise the huge positive impact  Barrow BID was having on the town, as a whole.

BID's commitment to creating a vibrant, thriving town centre has encouraged more people to buy and rent homes in the area. New homeowners and tenants often renovate, decorate and furnish their properties, spending money with local businesses, like ours. They also eat, drink and socialise locally, giving a welcome boost to the wider economy. It's a win-win for everyone.

As a born-and-bred, proud Barrovian, the town centre has always been close to my heart. In my younger years, I worked Saturday's at Stockroom Clothing, Chicago Junction and Brazington's fruit and veg market stall. I also worked for the Evening Mail and Barrow Post.  Back then, the town centre was full of independent shops and cafés, and I'd happily spend my wages there each week!

Like many towns across the UK, Barrow has faced challenges over the years. Yet, against the national trend, we're now seeing real regeneration, with new businesses opening and renewed confidence in the town centre. Barrow BID, led so passionately by Paul and his team, has played a significant part in that transformation.

I'll recall the first time I met Paul. He and the team, dressed as elves, visited our branch and gifted us a Christmas tree. We took part in the annual Christmas tree decorating competition, (coming 2nd) it was a fantastic way to engage with other local businesses, whilst supporting Christmas trade. 

Having seen first-hand the difference BID was making, I was asked if I would consider supporting the organisation further. I didn't hesitate to become a volunteer Board Director.

The role carries responsibility, but it's also incredibly rewarding. I enjoy working alongside the dedicated team, supporting events that bring people into our town centre. Seeing families and generations of all ages, enjoying themselves together. Most importantly, those events encourage people to shop, eat and spend locally, helping Barrow continue to thrive. I'm proud to play a small part in the journey..."
