Grow in Furness

We are transforming a large piece of land within Mardale Grove Allotments into a thriving community growing space that will help brighten and improve Barrow town centre.

Led by Barrow BID, the project brings together partnerships with Furness Multicultural Community Forum, Cumbria Wildlife Trust, Westmorland and Furness Council and Barrow Town Council to help create a greener, more sustainable future for the town.

The vision is to create a welcoming space where volunteers, schools, community groups and local residents can come together to grow flowers, plants and food while building friendships, learning new skills and improving wellbeing through positive community activity.

The site will include large greenhouses, raised growing beds, composting areas, rainwater harvesting systems and spaces for education, volunteering and wellbeing activities.

Flowers and plants grown on site will be used in planters and public green spaces across Barrow town centre, helping create a brighter, more welcoming environment for residents, visitors and local businesses.

By growing plants locally rather than relying on imported stock, the project will also help reduce transportation emissions, lower environmental impact and create a more sustainable and cost-effective approach to maintaining public spaces across the town.

Alongside environmental improvements, Grow in Furness will create opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to learn practical skills, improve confidence and wellbeing, reduce social isolation and feel part of something positive that is visibly improving the local area.

With continued community support, Grow in Furness will become a long-term sustainable hub focused on environmental improvement, education, volunteering and bringing people together, helping create a greener, more welcoming Barrow town centre for everyone who lives, works and visits the town.
