Furness Media is helping the planet, here’s how your business can too

April 22, 2026

This Earth Day, businesses across Barrow are being called to take action to make small, sustainable changes to help the planet.

One business leading the way is Furness Media, who have taken some significant steps over the past couple of years to reduce their carbon footprint. Installing solar panels and heat pumps has significantly reduced their CO₂ emissions, helping them move towards cleaner, greener energy.

It’s not just their building that’s gone greener. Behind the scenes, they use 100% green powered web hosting, ensuring the websites they build for clients have a lower environmental impact - helping businesses operate more sustainably.

With the opening of their coworking space came a careful rethink about how it would be furnished. By choosing upcycled and refurbished furniture, they’re not only reducing waste, but creating a unique space (complete with recycled bus seats for desks that definitely catch visitors’ attention!). The office even includes a secondhand refurbished coffee machine, with staff committed to using reusable water bottles and coffee cups. These small changes have made a big difference, with a stylish, practical office space they can be proud of.

Furness Media shows that not every sustainable change has to come at a high cost. Staff are encouraged to use public transport, walk or cycle to work, helping to cut everyday emissions. Simple initiatives, like introducing dedicated recycling bins for card, paper, plastic and cans, may seem small, but together they make a meaningful impact.

Managing Director, Guy Ritch, said: “We are working hard towards sustainable IT for our customers. The installation of Heat Pumps coupled with a Solar Electricity Solution in our new office at the heart of Barrow town centre will reduce tons of CO₂!”

If you’ve been inspired by Furness Media to take steps towards a greener business, Barrow BID’s Business Grant Scheme could help support your journey. With match funding available towards implementation of improvements such as LED lighting and energy saving technology, we are here to help you reduce your environmental impact while developing your business.
