Celebrating The National Year of Reading at Barrow Library

May 5, 2026

Barrow Library is embracing the National Year of Reading with a packed programme of activities, events and initiatives designed to inspire people of all ages to discover the joy of reading. With this year’s National Year of Reading theme, “Whatever You’re Into, Read Into It,” encouraging people to explore reading around their own interests, Barrow Library is showcasing that it has far more to offer than just fiction books!

Each month, the library is highlighting a new theme and showcasing their extensive range of books on the topic. May explores “Curious Minds”, featuring quizzes and games, and “Way Back When”, delving into history. Displays include titles for all ages, encouraging readers to explore different interests while reading for pleasure.

The initiative is supported by the National Literacy Trust, with all Barrow library staff becoming Literacy Champions. Leading the way is librarian Cathy, acting as the library’s Lead Literacy Champion, helping to promote reading across the Barrow community. It’s not just library staff championing the cause in Barrow, with local author Helen Phifer being named as local Ambassador for the National Year of Reading. Helen is set to visit the library on Friday 19th June, offering readers a chance to learn from a local literary legend about her work and journey to becoming a successful novelist.

The library is hoping to encourage more young people to get into reading with increased school visits in preparation for their Summer Reading Challenge. This encourages children to read during the Summer holidays for fun, giving them incentives to keep reading. This year’s challenge launches in Barrow on Saturday 4th July, with a series of events planned throughout the holidays to keep kids busy and engaged. With this year’s theme yet to be announced, follow Westmorland and Furness Libraries on socials to keep up to date.

Shannon Smyth, Library and Customer Assistant, said “All staff are really excited about the National Year of Reading, we’re looking forward to encouraging children, young adults and the like to read more for pleasure.”

With a huge range of activities planned and strong ties to the Barrow community, Barrow Library is set to lead the way this National Year of Reading, inspiring a new generation of readers.
