What’s your favourite Barrow BID event?
My favourite BID events are probably the Soapbox Derby and Dockside Festival because they completely transform Barrow and bring so many different people into the town. I love seeing the atmosphere build throughout the day and watching families, businesses and the wider community all get involved. There’s something really rewarding about knowing that the work happening behind the scenes helps create memories for people and makes the town feel alive
Why did you get involved with Barrow BID?
I got involved with Barrow BID because I wanted to be more involved in my local community and play a part in making Barrow a place that people are proud of. I love seeing the town centre full of people, especially during events, and I wanted the opportunity to be behind the scenes helping make those things happen. It’s also given me the chance to meet so many different people and gain experience that I wouldn’t get anywhere else.
Tell us something most people wouldn’t know about you?
Something most people probably wouldn’t know about me is that I’m a poet and spoken-word performer. I started writing poetry as a way of putting feelings into words, but it’s grown into something much bigger than that. I now perform my own work at open mics and events, and I’ve even won a poetry slam, which was such a surreal moment for me because something that started as a private way of expressing myself had turned into something I could stand on a stage and share with other people.
I’ve also organised my own poetry events to raise money for charity. I love how poetry can take something personal and turn it into something that other people can recognise themselves in. It’s given me a voice, a creative outlet and a way to connect with people I might never have met otherwise.
