New art workshops give autistic adults space to create and connect

August 1, 2026

Autus Cumbria have launched brand new art sessions for autistic adults to explore their creativity and meet new people.

After the success of the Autus Christmas Market, which featured stalls from numerous autistic artists and makers, it became clear that a space for autistic adults to experiment with their creativity was a must for the local area. With Autus having success with similar workshops for younger children, they decided to focus on an adult audience, with a lot of autistic people desiring a creative outlet in Barrow.

Building confidence within creative individuals is at the heart of these workshops, focusing on different media each week in a relaxed, no pressure environment. Without the pressure of having to start and finish something, Autus are hoping to give participants the opportunity to try new art forms without the expectation of results - making it more about the creative process and meeting new individuals.

Artist Jess Levine will be leading the sessions, having done a lot of group work with autistic people in the past, she wanted to give participants the opportunity to explore different media and learn what works for them. Jess believes that art is for everyone, and is committed to helping people develop new skills and talents and build on their existing interests.

Jess said “I’ve facilitated creative workshops and short courses for many years alongside my own art practice. I’ve worked with people experiencing homelessness, addiction and mental health challenges. I’ve worked with various community groups and with people who may feel marginalised in mainstream society. Art is a way of connecting to ourselves and others.”

Each session will have a main material, for example collage and print making, with a focus for that particular material. Classes include places in Barrow, still life, portraits and buildings, amongst other themes.

With her deep belief in art and creativity being key to holistic wellbeing, Jess hopes these workshops will be a safe space for autistic adults to enjoy different materials and creative techniques.
